A closely divided, do-nothing Congress appears to be in
our future. As in 2016, the pollsters were remarkably
wrong, but this time in the other direction though.
Democrats registered many more surprises than Republicans.

A do-nothing Congress is OK with many GOP megadonors -
do-nothing is better FOR THEM than do-Democratic, and
what's good for job creator GOP megadonors is good for
everybody, right?

Looks like the Senate will remain under Democratic control.
The Georgia race will go to a runoff, probably the most
expensive Senate election in history.

The House will be under nominal Republican control, but
with a very narrow margin no greater than the Democrats'
current margin and a far more ferociously divided caucus
and a likely less effective leader, they seem exceptionally
qualified to do-nothing.

Big surprises include how well Democrats did in OH and
PA against candidates endorsed by Trump and denying the
2020 election, and how well Republicans did in NY with
candidates not endorsed by Trump and not denying the
2020 election.

CO-3 will go to a recount between Boebert and Frisch.
The Alaska Senate and House races will be decided on
Nov 23 by ranked-choice voting. Several races are
uncalled because late-arriving mail-in ballots have
yet to be received and counted - from military overseas,
for instance.

The Georgia Senate race will go to a runoff, probably the

Polling places are starting to close on the East Coast.

May all losing candidates, after taking all reasonable
steps to verify close outcomes, graciously concede, for
a peaceful transition.

May all candidates, winning and losing, who based their
campaigns on lies and rumors, whether spoken by themselves
or by others, repent and make restitution by affirming
their future devotion to

the Enlightenment ideals of America's founders in all
future political activity.

Close races likely won't be called until tomorrow - at
the earliest. Some will be tracked here -

DeSantis springs his trap! 20 (mostly black) ex-felons
were allowed to register and vote, and THEN arrested.

He got his photo-ops, and who cares how many poor people
he messed up? It was a good lesson to the rest of them!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/26/desantis-florida-voter-fraud-law-confusion/

But if most of them will have charges dropped, as seems
likely, maybe DeSantis should send his task force on a
more productive mission, busting employers cheating with
immigrants -

Everybody says that 2022 is the most consequential
election in American history - especially those trying to
raise money for candidates. GOP started out strong,
faded after the Roe v Wade decision, and lately has been
boosted by continuing inflation, even though gas prices
have started falling again, and the US can't do much about
global oil prices.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/24/opinion/saudi-arabia-opec-oil-cut.html

Of course they said most consequential election in 2016,
2018, and 2022, and will say it again in 2024. And they
were right - the seminal question of the decade is -

Will American join the global lurch from democracy to
reactionary Potemkin democracy, neo-fascism, and cult
of personality?

Putin, Xi, Kim, and the ayatollahs certainly believe that
the Enlightenment ideals of America's founders are bound
to lose out to their superior methods of governance.

Certainly the second Trump constituency -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/trump.html#Second%20Trump%20Constituency

is looking forward with glee to Trump's reinstatement
and The Storm, either in 2022 or 2024. Calling them
insurrectionists and violent extremists gratifies them -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/12/kari-lake-trump-populism-sellout/

They want to identify as far away as possible from the
Enlightenment ideals of America's founders.

What do you have to lose?

Will 2022 turn out like 1866? Some might hope so, but
many members of the first Trump constituency

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/trump.html#First%20Trump%20Constituency

might do well to consider the consequences of Trumpist
success. Not necessarily Trump success - there are
several worse Trumpists who hope to displace him at the
center of Trumpism -

Everybody says that 2022 is the most consequential election
in American history - especially those trying to raise
money for candidates.

Of course they said that in 2016, 2018, and 2022, and will
say it again in 2024. And they're right - the seminal
question of the decade is -

Will American join the global lurch from democracy to
reactionary Potemkin democracy, neo-fascism, and cult
of personality?

Putin, Xi, Kim, and the ayatollahs certainly believe that
the Enlightenment ideals of America's founders are bound
to lose out to their superior methods of governance.

==

Certainly the second Trump constituency -
 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/trump.html#Second%20Trump%20Constituency

is looking forward with glee to Trump's reinstatement
and The Storm, either in 2022 or 2024. Calling them
insurrectionists and violent extremists gratifies them -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/12/kari-lake-trump-populism-sellout/

they want to identify as far away as possible from the
Enlightenment ideals of America's founders.

many members of the first Trump constituency

might do well to consider the consequences of Trumpist
success. Not necessarily Trump success - there are
several worse Trumpists who hope to displace him at the
center of Trumpism -

Money is the mother's milk of politics. Tired of that?

 https://americanpromise.net/

In the meantime, wondering who to support for House of
Representatives in California? If you can afford political
contributions, do you wonder where to send them where they
will do some good? Maybe there aren't any serious
contests in your state and district. You could donate
to national organizations

DCCC https://secure.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/8340

but maybe you've wondered how good they are at triage -
separating out those candidates that are sure to win or
sure to lose, in order to donate where the outcome is
truly uncertain and a donation might make a difference.

In 2016 the pros were often fooled by independent or
undecided voters who had already made up their minds for
Trump and Trumpists but didn't want to say so to pollsters
who might be liberals. Maybe the pollsters are more
discerning now. Maybe not.

In the following, taken from 270towin's consensus among
several sources, you can find some tossups and tilts -
almost tossups - and leaning Democratic and leaning
Republican. These are the races that might be worth
your money.

How can you tell if you are investing wisely or throwing
money away? If you have a verifiable method, you have
a brilliant career ahead in political consulting. If you
just CLAIM to have a verifiable method, you're just like
all the others. In the following, tossups and tilts
might be productive choices, and the leaning more of
a gamble.

But these classifications are changing constantly - the
next court decision, indictment, economic news, pandemic,
or foreign policy reversal can change everything -
as has already happened several times this summer.
So keep checking!

anyway, as would inflation, as would a chaotic withdrawal
from Afghanistan. All that would have guaranteed a
Democratic Congress elected in 2022.

So far, the only gift to the Democrats was the leaked
Supreme Court memo, and only if they can explain to swing
voters that it's much more than abortion at stake once
the GOP starts repealing precedents.

Having Biden in office rather than Trump when Putin invaded
Ukraine was a gift to the entire western democratic world,
but the average American swing voter probably doesn't care.
