For swing voters, are democracy, and the other
Enlightenment ideals of America's founders,

critical election issues compared to gas prices?

We can do something NOW toward preventing future
insurrections. The Jan 6 committee will outline
legislative steps in its final report.

There is nothing feasible NOW to influence Putin to stop
aggression or MBS to increase oil production enough to
affect global oil prices. Our domestic gas problem
is one of price, which reflects the global oil market,
not one of supply - America is a net exporter. No long
gas lines except at the cheapest place in town - unlike
the 1970's. The GOP megadonor solution is to abandon
environmental restrictions and ignore climate change and
drill baby drill - but that's easier said than done -

 https://www.marketplace.org/2022/08/01/why-arent-oil-companies-drilling-on-their-9000-land-leases/

and won't make a noticeable change before the 2024
election. RISING oil (and gas) prices might make
drilling happen quicker. In any case, the GOP is not going
to make American oil companies sell oil domestically for
less than it's worth globally.

But by 2024 a global economic recession might well have
cured global inflation, reducing demand for gasoline faster
than MBS can cut production. For the time being, though,
inflation will continue to be a global problem, worse in
most countries than in America. Already there are signs
that inflation is ending - or recession is beginning -
or both?

Covid was the luckiest thing that ever happened to Trump!

Paralyzing the global economy and forcing gas prices down
meant people associated low gas prices with the end of
Trump's term. When the economy and gas prices recovered,
Biden was president and got the blame. Of course, neither
Trump nor Biden have much to do with global oil prices;
that honor belongs to Putin and MBS. But they aren't
running in our election!

Has the Fed over-corrected?

From a political perspective, there's too much time lag
in economics.

Why is inflation so stubborn?

Wholesale gas prices have been declining more rapidly than
retail prices at the pump

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/21/business/gas-prices-decline-streak.html

New car prices are still increasing swiftly, and dealer
profits remain sharply elevated with little sign of
cracking

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/21/business/economy/inflation-car-market.html

And the GOP solution to inflation? In public blame Biden,
of course, and in private, thank the oil and automotive
megadonors for their generous dark campaign money.

Interfere with the free market of job-creator corporations?
Not on the GOP's watch! More likely to interfere with
the free market of labor, by union-busting.

But inflation is a global problem, and there isn't much
Biden, or the GOP, can do about most of it. If global
inflation were to be blamed on one person, it might
be Putin, for the Ukraine war, or Xi, for his covid
shutdown policies. But rather than criticize Putin,
increasing numbers of GOP leaders would rather praise him
as a strong leader.

What is the rest of the Republican agenda?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

High gas prices are global -

 https://apnews.com/article/global-gas-prices-957d4b6b574d5924d68d5776f22363b1

So voters' choices are high gas prices and the rest of
the Democratic agenda; or, high gas prices and the rest
of the Republican agenda

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/06/19/voters-angry-about-inflation-should-pay-attention-before-november/

Too bad about that!

There's hardly any historical difference between the
parties on inflation because it mostly depends on external
factors neither controls.

But what does correlate over and over - it's EITHER
inflation or unemployment. That means that no
matter who wins this election over inflation, they'll
get the blame for unemployment and recession next time.
Nobody knows how to avoid both for a long time in the
face of external shocks like war or covid or OPEC or
climate change.

American reshoring means higher prices but more jobs for
some Americans. Unfortunately an aging population
and insufficient immigration means there won't be enough
workers for those jobs - increasing wage pressure and
inflation.

And foreign reshoring means fewer jobs for other Americans.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/03/business/economy/pandemic-supply-chains-inflation.html

Have covid and Putin permanently lowered the global
standard of living?

The German ruling class was enjoying the benefits of
globalization of energy resources. Just as the
American ruling class was enjoying the benefits of
globalization of manufacturing.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/07/opinion/germany-russia-ukraine-energy.html

Until the benefits disappeared overnight, replaced
by unexpected costs - and shortages and inflation.
It's Putin's new world order.

Rocketing rents! Many causes and no short-term solutions
One new cause is a major increase in corporate landlords
buying up housing. In vacation areas, often for
short-term rentals rather than permanent residents.

 https://apnews.com/article/business-lifestyle-us-news-miami-florida-a4717c05df3cb0530b73a4fe998ec5d1

GOP solution - prohibit rent controls, zoning restrictions,
and environmental reviews, to increase the supply of
housing built cheaply and sold expensively.
