Formerly major newspapers like the San Jose Mercury News get all their non-local news from those sources, along with AP News and Reuters. The theory of modern consolidation is that you don't have to have competition within a channel as long as you have competitive channels. But different channels like print media, cable TV, and social media cater to distinctly different audiences that don't switch channels much. And some people don't care to distinguish journalism from entertainment.
