Like Biden, the victorious Taliban is having a tough
autumn. They only know one way to deal with problems and
criticism - a beating first and then murder. Later,
for efficiency, they will probably skip the first step.
The only good news is that they are not as bad as their
friends in Al Qaeda or their enemies in Islamic State.

Pakistan loved to shelter the Afghan Taliban - that had
to do with Kashmir -

But now Pakistan resents the Afghans sheltering the
Pakistani Taliban. The Afghans aren't making much
progress against foreign terrorists on their soil. And the
Pakistanis think Afghan refugees streaming into Pakistan
shelter terrorists. They've built a fence along their
entire border.

Afghanistan is not a direct long-term threat to American
credibility.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/29/opinion/afghanistan-withdrawal-history.html

Trumpist isolationism is the long-term threat - to our
allies but most of all to ourselves. There is no way
to overcome global challenges without global partners.
And Afghanistan might be Trump's ticket to re-election.

Trump is one lucky guy. His biggest stroke of luck
of all - losing the election! So he avoided blame for
the Afghanistan withdrawal disaster that he set in motion,
which would have sunk GOP hopes for 2022.

Now the Taliban have given him a ticket to re-election
since no matter what Biden does or doesn't do, Trump won't
have to come up with any actual Afghanistan policies or
put them to the test of the heat of battle. And it
takes the heat off Trump, and them, for his covid disaster.

If the GOP gets control of Congress, they'll be
investigating Biden and Afghanistan endlessly with never
a conclusion -

and without investigating Reagan or Bush or the other
enablers of the Taliban in the first place.

What have Americans learned? Probably nothing.
That's the greatest tragedy of Afghanistan.

As after Vietnam, a new bipartisan generation of
overly-confident civilian and military leaders will get
involved in other unstable countries.

 https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-afghanistan-036874ebcb40acb404ac1a7f3db11f1a

The hope is that elite ruling classes in other unstable
countries will learn that US involvement is not forever and
the end might come faster than anybody could imagine - so
they better have a better plan. When water's going down
the drain, it just circles faster and faster. Better to
be on the side of nationalism than of foreign imperialism.

As for the former elite ruling class of Afghanistan,
it doesn't matter much what they learned since they are
either exiled or soon dead.
