British roots of modern minority rule.

 https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/four-folkways/

 https://global.oup.com/ushe/product/albions-seed-9780195069051?cc=us&lang=en&

Although there many streams of people into America over
the years, its history has been largely dominated by men
of British descent. Four distinct cultural groups dominated
early American life.

The Cavaliers brought their feudal hereditary nobility
ideals and settled in the South to become the planter
class. Their descendants still run, or try to run,
Southern politics and society. But their numbers
are small. They had to recruit some helpers -
without giving them anything valuable.

The Borderlands people, or Scotch-Irish, were used to a
hard violent life. They took all the land nobody else
wanted - particularly in Appalachia where a plantation
economy didn't work. All they wanted was to be left
alone and work things out themselves. Their physical
and spiritual descendants still dominate rural America.

The Cavaliers eventually realized that they could put
the Borderlands people to good use by tricking them into
defending the Cavaliers.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

Thus minority rule was reborn in the new world -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

All the Cavaliers needed to do was offer the Borderlands
people the freedom to physically oppress somebody else -
which turned out to be Indians, Africans, and later Latinos
and Asians. In turn they defended the minority rulers
from new threats from two other British strains -

the Puritans in New England and the Quakers in
Pennsylvania. They were quite different in theology and
spiritual practice, but they both embraced Enlightenment
ideals that eventually led to abolitionism, a direct threat
to the Cavaliers - who convinced the Borderlands people
that it was a direct threat to them as well, though most
could not afford slaves.

There were many other streams of immigrants, particularly
in later years. Catholic Irish - different from the
Protestant Scotch-Irish from the Borderlands - were the
whisky-soaked papist bete noir of 1800. And later
there were Germans and Italians and other non-Northern
Europeans, who all took their turns as the punching bags
for anti-immigrant sentiment, until they Americanized
by taking up the same sentiment against later arrivals
like Asians and Puerto Ricans. The modern Trumpist
Dixiecrat GOP is actively trying to trick as many of them
as possible into supporting minority rule. Sometimes,
as with Cubans and Vietnamese, it suffices to tell them
in their native language that Biden is a communist,

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Slavery,
segregation, voter suppression all rhyme historically.
So does anti-immigrant hysteria - the targets change but
the ammunition rhymes.

The pro-life goal isn’t an end to abortion. It’s to
establish another means of controlling women. Poor women
that is - rich ones can always travel to get the medical
care they want. But they're happy to regulate abortion
and contraception for poor women, to keep single-issue
voters supporting minority rule.

What's so hard to understand about pro-guns and
anti-abortion? Both are single-issue constituencies that
will reliably vote GOP, disregarding all other issues,
if they get their way on their single issue.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Thus GOP legislators are freed to pursue their real agendas
of billionaire tax relief etc - the issues their major
donors really care about. Billionaires don't really care
about gun laws - they have their private security people.
They don't really care about abortion laws - they can
travel if they need to.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/12/01/supreme-courts-pro-gun-pro-life-problem/

Logical consistency is not a criterion.

1619 was indeed a pivotal year in Virginia and for the
southern colonies that followed it - as every Virginia
seventh grader learned circa 1960 -

arrival of single women from England formation of the
General Assembly arrival of slaves from Africa

and collectively these could be considered the starting
points of southern American culture and politics,
though not of northern American culture and politics.
Nevertheless, preserving slavery and thus the southern
aristocrat ruling class was the recurrent crisis of
American politics until segregation replaced slavery -
and the pattern repeated - and now voter suppression has
replaced segregation.

The goal of preserving minority rule gets a new jolt
of energy from young people. Not even close to a
majority, but violent enough to cause trouble.

 https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/11/scary-future-american-right-national-conservatism-conference/620746/

It's exactly the sort of demagoguery that the Founders knew
so well and hoped to suppress forever with a Constitution
based on Enlightenment ideals. But Enlightenment
ideals were compromised by a practical necessity to ally
themselves with the hereditary nobility of slaveowners
who had quite different ideals. The spiritual heirs of
the slaveowners are panicking in a dangerous way.

The real turning point was the election of Barack Obama
in 2008

Wrong - that was when it fully emerged from its closet.
But the turning point was Nixon's Southern Strategy
attracting Strom Thurmond and his pals, who took over
the GOP over 20 years - think Newt Gingrich - and turned
it Dixiecratic, taking all their old methods national -
giving us the modern Trumpist Dixiecrat GOP.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

The major GOP donors - the spiritual heirs of the Southern
plantation class hereditary nobility - seem to be in a
demographic panic, willing to abandon any pretense of
upholding the Enlightenment ideals of America's founders -

So if you can't hold on to power by winning elections,
you have to quit having elections that you could lose.

You can't blame the lunatic fringe for being the lunatic
fringe. All you can do is lock them up as they commit
crimes and are convicted.

 https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/leonard-pitts-jr/article254836147.html

But you can blame people who know better, but encourage
and defend the lunatic fringe in order to protect minority
rule... and then leave them to their fate to rot in jail
after they acted on the encouragement they got.

But don't expect any of them to repent; they will only
hit back twice as hard. That's what the slaveowners
did, that's what the segregationists did, and the
modern Trumpist Dixiecrat Republicans are their heirs.
A representative democracy without slavery, without
segregation, without minority rule, is not a country they
wanted or want to live in.

America's not polarized? In contrast to Robert Kagan,

 https://www.facebook.com/politicalscrapbooknet/posts/1504208579923656

Michael Hiltzik claims that there is no polarization
in America, pointing to large national majorities for
many Democratic priorities, many of which were formerly
Republican priorities too.

 https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-09-22/america-not-facing-a-civil-war-just-a-loudmouthed-extremism

Hiltzik just sees a lot of loud-mouthed extremists, just
like the storm troopers of the 1930's.

But the important polarization is between the red states,
most of which are not close to evenly divided, and the
blue states, most of what are not close to evenly divided.
Even within California, the People's Republic of Berkeley
and the State of Jefferson are about as far a part as
possible ideologically.

If it were simply a matter of counting people or voters,
the Democrats are a clear majority. Nor is it a matter
of identifying positions on policies - many voters will
reject a proposal from the other party yet would accept
essentially the same proposal from their own party.

The essential issue is that the major donors supporting
their own minority rule have decided that cult of
personality is an acceptable facade for their own ends.
So they will support Trump, or whichever super-Trump can
wrest his base away, in order to distract the masses with
culture wars while a GOP Congress cultivates minority
rule by cutting taxes for billionaires, deregulating for
billionaires, busting unions for billionaires, making
sure that there is plenty of illegal immigration for
billionaires, and installing a reactionary judiciary to
support all this billionaire welfare.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

All supported by a constitutional system that favors a
rural minority

 https://www.reduce-rural-bias.net/

easily influenced by big money and a reactionary media
machine that is whining about persecution all the way to
the bank.

The net result is that the nation as a whole is very
rapidly polarizing toward regional federalism

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-regional.html

as the poles accept rumors they are fed that they other
pole is out to destroy their way of life.

Why is America headed toward regional federalism?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-regional.html

America's founders never dreamed that a national cult
of personality could arise. It was not technically
possible in their day. They counted on republican virtue -
devotion to principle above personal or partisan advantage
- to limit demagogues.

But a national cult of personality has happened now.
And there seems to be no republican virtue left. Which
currently prominent Republican politician would have
been an asset at the Constitutional Convention of 1787?
None of them. Many Democrats are little better.

There are many reasons for this, Technology of mass
media is one. The corresponding fantastic expense
of political campaigns and the corresponding influx of
unlimited dark campaign money are just as important.
No political candidate can afford to be virtuous these
days.

Also important, the influence of feudal thinking -
that only a few have a right to a say in the government
of the many - has permeated the politics of slavery,
then segregation, and finally voter suppression now.
Formerly regional, it's now national.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

The Trumpists, funded by the enthusiasts for minority
rule, are laying the groundwork to take over as much of
the country as they can.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/09/23/texas-secretary-states-office-announces-audit-2020-election-results-after-trump-calls-one/

This time they'll make sure that Trump's government is
staffed by reliable effective agents to promote their
agenda.

Trump couldn't do this by himself. He relies on
other people's money and other people's media platforms.
They cooperate because Trump is good for their business.
But Trump would be nowhere without the major GOP donors.
Some seemed to be taken aback right after Jan 6, but they
all seem to have reconsidered and concluded that Trump is
the best figurehead and his base the best mass movement
for making minority rule permanent.

There is a Great Replacement going on!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/09/17/dan-patrick-great-replacement-theory/

It's the Great Replacement of even a facade of
representative democracy with unapologetic upfront feudal
minority rule - by the rich and powerful, for the rich
and powerful.

But since most voters won't vote for that, the Great
Replacers have to give them something else to vote against
- gun controls, abortion, immigration, masks, vaccinations,
critical race theory. So in the end, the Great
Replacement is hiding the real goals of minority rule and
replacing them with Potemkin goals in the minds of voters.

Osama bin Laden's great 9/11 victory!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/interactive/2021/911-conspiracy-theories/

He stressed vulnerable Americans so much that the country
is now divided into parties based on fact vs fantasy.
This is exactly the future he wanted to create, for his
people and ours - a future based on fear, suspicion,
ignorance, and superstition. A future that makes it
easier, if not inevitable, for authoritarian dictatorships
to arise that tell people what to think - as in North
Korea, and increasingly in China, Russia, Iran, and many
smaller countries.

Instead of remaining United States, it shall end up
separated states

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/interactive/2021/911-books-american-values/

More here - bin Laden couldn't defeat America himself but
he could get America to defeat itself.

 https://apnews.com/article/911-conspiracy-qanon-7d288d0678f5cc7425412931b0212009

Traditional Republicans opposed authoritarian
dictatorships. Now the Trumpist Dixiecrat Republican
Party admires them and is expelling all those traditional
Republicans that won't tout the party line, zigging and
zagging on command. The party of Lincoln and Theodore
Roosevelt and Eisenhower is no more. It's the
party of Osama bin Laden - and Strom Thurmond - now.
It's waging war on all the rational Enlightenment ideals
that motivated America's founders. All for the benefit
of the minority ruling political donor class, which once
supported conservative and libertarian values but now has
turned to the dark side of the force as more efficient
for protecting its power.

How do the elite beneficiaries of minority rule get
ordinary people to vote on their behalf?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Astroturf!

 https://apnews.com/article/business-health-coronavirus-pandemic-3157002e9d011e5283f55886b1c7078a

Of course, critical race theory and masking rules don't
really matter much to the major donors funding these
activities. Billionaire tax relief, deregulation,
union-busting, and reactionary judiciary are the real
goals. But they can't say that out loud - that
might unconfuse their voters! They have to find culture
war issues to get ordinary voters to vote, against their
own economic interests, for approved Dixiecrat Republican

Just one of the apotheoses of feudal minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Hungary is corrupt, repressive and authoritarian, a place
where democracy is little more than window dressing and
the state exists to plunder the public on behalf of a tiny
ruling elite

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/06/opinion/tucker-carlson-viktor-orban.html

There have always been American reactionaries - not
conservative at all - willing to be paid to praise, and
uphold as models, dictatorships that better protect their
ruling kleptocracies than ours does. These are the real
traitors to the Enlightenment ideals of America's founders.

Applying the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle to elections!

The major GOP donors are not trying to find proof of
anything - it suffices to create a cloud of doubt and
uncertainty about results that are certain beyond doubt.
If nothing is true and everything is possible - then why
not just have GOP state legislatures announce the election
results - no need to even count ballots. That's the
only way to preserve minority rule.

Minority rule depends on dividing the masses against
themselves.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

"Critical race theory" - which hardly any
legislator can accurately define - is just this year's
tool for division.

 https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/leonard-pitts-jr/article252655298.html

And what's critical race theory's most important
conclusion? That minority rule depends on dividing
the masses against themselves, and slavery and race have
been the most reliable tools over centuries! No wonder
the GOP is against it - it's not really about 1619, it's
about 2022 and 2024.

Of course the modern Dixiecrat-Republican Party is based
on ignorance; it's the legacy of the feudal Southern
aristocrats who saw no need to educate poor whites beyond
basic literacy and a positive need to keep black people
illiterate.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

And it didn't work that well on basic literacy; conscripts
reporting in 1917 to Camp Shelby, MS almost all required
remedial literacy - but almost none required remedial
marksmanship. Free public high schools were still
a revolutionary innovation in rural Mississippi in the
1920's.

GOP can't win on facts or logic, so it has to wage politics
by other means. Fortunately its base is more susceptible
to other means than to facts or logic.

GOP uses critical race theory as a catch-all for any
attempt to talk about slavery and segregation - because
those eras rhyme too well with today's voter suppression.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/05/29/critical-race-theory-bans-schools/

Same kinds of politicians, same excuses, same hidden
real agenda. Slavery was the main political topic
of America's first century, and segregation the main
political topic of the South's second century, and voter
suppression seems to be the keynote of the third century.
Don't take the word of a bunch of modern leftist professors
- just ask the pillars of Southern Aristocrat society.
They didn't mince words in 1850 or 1950 and we can expect
the same from them in 2050 if nothing significant is done.

What was the greatest achievement of Southern Culture?

Surely it was convincing poor white men to fight for
the ruling class of rich slaveholders, against their own
economic and personal interests.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

How did they do it?

==

The ruling class feared losing its economic and political
power with the inevitable end of slavery. Most of the
civilized world had ended legal slavery by 1860, though it
survived in places like Saudi Arabia until 1962. As in
the South, the Saudis had clerics willing to affirm that
slavery was consistent with the state religion.

But the immediate cause of the Civil War was the imminent
loss of southern control of the US Senate due to new free
states being formed faster than slave states. The biggest
political issue in the country from 1820-1850 was keeping
Senate parity between slave and free states

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_Compromise

For the South, preserving slavery where it already
existed was not enough - it had to be expanded to maintain
Senate parity. The prospect of gaining a permanent Senate
majority by admitting new slave states was a major factor
in Southern support for the Mexican War - which led to an
opposing Northern reaction -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilmot_Proviso

in crises of this sort the two sets of extremists were
almost certain to grow in power, swallowing up more and
more members of the conciliatory center - sound familiar?
The history of the 1850's is a history of the death of
bipartisanship.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compromise_of_1850

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas%E2%80%93Nebraska_Act

Only a small minority of Southern men were slaveowners -
yet they maintained their power in a very feudal way,
keeping poor free whites and poor slave blacks ignorant.
And they reinforced that by letting only landowners vote
- although that gradually eroded, North Carolina still
restricted voting to landowners until 1856.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_rights_in_the_United_States#Milestones_of_national_franchise_changes

The ruling class had to make minimal concessions,
like suffrage, to the white male masses to keep them on
their side. But they spared no effort to indoctrinate
those masses on the value of slavery for controlling black
people who might otherwise marry white women. Of course,
the main cause of mixed-race children was slaveowner rape
of slave women, but facts were not important compared to
feelings about being Southern.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I like it

 https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/06/confederate-lost-cause-myth/618711

After the first year of enthusiasm, most poor whites
recognized that it was a rich man's war and a poor man's
fight, especially in light of the slaveholder exemption -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty_Negro_Law

So when persuasion failed, the ruling class resorted to
armed conscription agents.

The Confederacy enacted the first conscription laws in
United States history and the percentage of Confederate
soldiers who were conscripts was nearly double that of
Union soldiers.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_Conscription_Acts_1862%E2%80%931864

The Confederates knew that their generals were on average
better and their foot soldiers were on average better, at
least at first. But the North had more cannon fodder,
with new arrivals from Europe every day. And dependent on
foreign trade as they were, the Confederate leaders somehow
overlooked the fact that the Navy remained 99% Union -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_blockade

==

After the war the ruling class mythologists created an
elaborate fantasy about a sacred Lost Cause that was about
white freedom, not black slavery, turning facts on their
head, despite the clear statements of the Confederate
leaders at the time. The Confederate Constitution is
mostly verbatim from the US Constitution - except for the
clauses added to protect slavery.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_States_of_America

The sacred Lost Cause is regularly re-enacted to this day.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederates_in_the_Attic

The goal as always was to get poor whites to identify
with the rich whites that were keeping them poor, rather
than the poor blacks that the rich whites were keeping
even poorer. They found plenty of takers, who enjoyed
a century of abuse of black people with the approval of
the ruling class. That appeared to be declining by the
1970's - in 2005 the Republicans apologized to the NAACP
for the Southern Strategy -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2005/07/14/rnc-chief-to-say-it-was-wrong-to-exploit-racial-conflict-for-votes/66889840-8d59-44e1-8784-5c9b9ae85499/

but has come back with a vengeance under Trumpism.
No GOP leader would apologize now - instead they expect
an apology from black people for being so ungrateful for
all the things Trump has done for them.

Other Southerners are beginning to feel some discomfort
being descendants of soldiers who fought for slavery,
and so they embrace a mythology that the fight was about
something else - anything else - especially Southern white
freedom from the prosperous and educated Yankee elites.
To recognize that the elites exploiting poor Southern
whites today are still the same rich Southern whites as
always, is too much cognitive dissonance for poor Southern
whites - it's easier to continue to subscribe to your
ancestors' foolishness than to admit they were and you
are fools.

Thus when an enthusiastic high school Future Farmer
explained the merits of contour plowing in Depression-era
Mississippi, one farmer listened attentively and then
replied that contour plowing was not in Scripture and so he
wouldn't do it. Better to continue to ruin what's left
of your land than admit than you and your ancestors were
wrong and modern educated ideas from outsiders were right.

==

A similar mythologizing process occurs today, as a minority
of Americans attempt to maintain control over a larger
majority,

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

using Constitutional artifacts

 https://www.reduce-rural-bias.net/

left over from earlier slavery compromises

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-fifths_Compromise

The major donors that control the GOP and set its agenda
know they could not win a fair election based on an honest
disclosure of their objectives and tactics,

 https://www.facebook.com/politicalscrapbooknet/posts/1376797479331434

so they have to talk about something else.

Most Southern poor whites support taxing the rich, economic
relief for the poor, free or low-cost medical care, etc
- until they are told that those are Democratic ideas,
not Republican. Of course the ruling class tells them
that through their controlled media channels since the
ruling class is opposed to all those proposals.

Like their Reconstruction progenitors, the aristocracy
makes up mythologies that appeal to low-information
single-issue voters - firearms, right-to-life, opposition
to Castro or Chavez, etc. Voters that can be captured
by catering to a single issue that the donors don't
care much about are key to maintaining minority rule.
The conversation is not about facts that could be verified
but about feelings that the ruling class has carefully
cultivated in the target voters - as with the 2020 Stolen
Election myth.

It was about the fact that each state had the right to
govern itself

They're still using that same excuse. About slavery
then, about segregation later, about voter suppression now.

The radicalization of the Republican Party has outpaced
what even most critical observers imagined

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/05/20/american-democracy-is-even-worse-shape-than-you-think/

The Trumpist modern Dixiecrat-Republican Party has a plan
and they are executing it by move fast and break things.

It depends on voter suppression -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

and rural bias -

 https://www.reduce-rural-bias.net/

not on vain hopes of convincing more voters to join them
or compromising to get bipartisan votes.

The only way to stop them is to end filibuster and pass
legislation to support democracy while it's still possible.
Failing to act now, in a vain hope for bipartisanship,
would be a blot on the careers of Manchin and Sinema
and others.

But if Republicans gain control again, they intend never to
yield it again, for fear of never being able to regain it.
GOP donors' strategic problem is to figure out how to get
Trump voters to transfer their allegiance intact to his
smarter and bolder and more ruthless successor, whoever
that might turn out to be.

It would be good to get regional federalism started BEFORE
we learn the answer to who's next after Trump?

Dinosaurs and minority rule!

The Dinosaurs TV series was designed to appeal to children

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinosaurs_(TV_series)

but had meatier content just beneath the surface.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dinosaurs_episodes#Season_1_(1991)

A couple of early episodes contain an allegory of how
minority rule works - then and now.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Episode 1 contains an encounter between a corporate boss
from the ruling class - Mr Richfield, of the WESAYSO Corp,
who retains his Southern planter accent - and an hourly
tree-pusher named Sinclair.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eskYvfJzf8 starting
about 1:40.

Sinclair asks for a raise but he's just a tree-pusher -
No dreams for you Sinclair - and Richfield fires him.
Nobody disputes income inequality or wealth inequality
here!

But what if the masses revolted against the ruling class?
They have to be distracted by inventing a common enemy -
in this case, old mothers in law. Nobody ever says
that mothers-in-law are particularly worse than any other
group of people, but Mr Richfield is undoubtedly aware
that they would pose a tax burden on his class as they age.

So the ruling class has invented a holiday, Hurling Day,
where every male dinosaur can throw his mother-in-law off
a cliff into the tar pits when she turns 72. It's not
exactly a lynching but everybody takes pictures - Richfield
even has a VHS tape of his hurling day, which he replays
in slow motion. As Sinclair's turn approaches, Richfield
congratulates him on the big day and comments that this
is the day that the lowest of the low stand shoulder to
shoulder with the highest of the high against the common
enemy,

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm6-ZWXHWpU starting
about 6:30.

implying a false brotherhood in order to keep the working
class from understanding who the true enemy is -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

No telling whether all this was in the minds of
the show's creators, but it's striking now that the
Dixiecrat-Republican Party is pretty much dropping the
fig leaves that previously covered their intentions.

How the Republican billionaires consolidated their control
of the GOP.

They got rid of the Fairness Doctrine and consolidated
the right-wing media as much as possible and told them
what to say to keep their listeners engaged and enraged.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/04/02/what-scorching-john-boehner-book-excerpt-says-about-todays-gop/

First the media became the organ of the major donors and
then the party became an organ of the media. Now GOP
candidates have media advisors instead of policy advisors.
The donors like that fine - if they need legislation, they
can wait until they have a majority again in Congress
and then send dark money and dark marching orders to
their legislators. Otherwise, the same dark money orders
the legislators to just vote NO on Democratic proposals,
regardless of how GOP voters feel. The dark money will
confuse and distract the GOP voters at the next election
so they vote against their own interests again.

"politics of lies and bigotry that has become the

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/03/18/two-intel-reports-upend-gop-propaganda/

"has become"? That makes it sound recent.
The Dixiecrats started to take over the GOP in the 60's,
and the seed blossomed with Newt Gingrich in the 90's,
bore vile Tea Party fruit in 2010, and became invasive and
pervasive under Trump, expanding from the land of cotton

Lies to deceive the masses and bigotry to divide the masses
have been essentials tactics of minority rule since... at

Every Republican senator would vote for the Biden
recovery package in a minute if Biden promised to keep
the filibuster.

Republican eyes are on the real prize - derailing HR1 and
protecting minority rule.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Republican state legislators are doing their part to
propose as many anti-democracy measures as possible.
If they can kill HR1 too, then they can fight another
day when they have a majority to undo everything Biden
(and Obama and Clinton) have ever done.

How single-issue politics works.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/03/opinion/abortion-trump-heatbeat.html

Politicians who vote the way single-issue voters want on
their single issue can then vote any way they like on
everything else. Single-issue voters are a pillar of
minority rule.

And how does rape or incest affect the humanity of
the fetus? Aside from providing an escape hatch for

How's the Supreme Court going to rule on voting rights?

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/02/opinion/voting-rights-act-supreme-court.html

Like Plessy v Ferguson - it's enough to SAY everybody has
an equal chance.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plessy_v._Ferguson

Or like Brown v Board - you must DO what is needed so
everybody has an equal chance.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_v._Board_of_Education

Minority rule is based on SAY one thing and DO the
opposite.

CPAC proved it - Democrats must maximize democracy while
they have a chance.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/28/us/politics/trump-cpac-republicans.html

Normally you'd expect the ruling party to lose Congress
during the mid-term elections, especially when margins
are as narrow as they are now. The good news from
CPAC is that Trump is in full control and will devote all
his party's efforts to punishing Republicans who weren't
100% Trumpist. If he succeeds, Democrats might well
retain control of Congress and have four years instead of
two years to accomplish something.

The bad news from CPAC is that Trump is in full control
and will devote all his party's effort to opposing any and
all Biden/Obama/Clinton initiatives, even - especially -
those that are supported by Republican voters as long as
they don't know they are Democratic initiatives.

What does that mean about "bipartisanship"?
There won't be any. Moderate Republicans in the House
face primaries in 2022 where Trump intends to retire them,
so they are ill-advised to compromise with Democrats.
In the Senate, those facing re-election in 2022 are by
definition Trumpists except Murkowski. It's fine for
Romney to propose child tax credits, but it's hot air
unless he can bring along 9 other Republicans to get to
60 votes. That's not going to happen.

So to accomplish anything beyond the narrow confines
permitted by reconciliation, Democrats are going to have
to bite the bullet and eliminate filibuster so they can
institute essential reforms for democracy. The Republicans
have made their game plan proudly explicit - disenfranchise
as many Democrats as possible!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/03/01/trumps-biggest-cpac-lie-unmasks-vile-truth-democrats-ignore-it-their-peril/

The Republicans' slave-owning and segregationist
spiritual forebears woud be so proud of them - Lincoln's
abolitionists defeated at last by voter suppression!
By a party with the same Republican name!

 https://apnews.com/article/bills-voting-rights-elections-coronavirus-pandemic-voter-registration-0e94844d72d2a2bf8b51b1c950bd64fc

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/27/us/republican-voter-suppression.html

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/31/us/politics/gerrymander-census-democrats-republicans.html

As Benjamin Tillman said - he could have been speaking
for Trump -

"In my State there were 135,000 negro voters, or
negroes of voting age, and some 90,000 or 95,000 white
voters.... Now, I want to ask you, with a free vote
and a fair count, how are you going to beat 135,000 by
95,000? "

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disenfranchisement_after_the_Reconstruction_era#Post-Reconstruction_disenfranchisement

The filibuster doesn't "protect" modern Democrats
when they are in the minority, and it never did anything
to promote bipartisanship. It DOES protect old-time
Dixiecrats and modern Republicans by making is very
difficult to pass legislation opposed by their donors,
no matter how popular with their voters. Manchin and
Sinema can be forgiven everything else if they yield
on filibuster.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/democracy.html#filibuster

Despite these many cross-currents, the outcome of the
2022 elections will be driven by economic results first
and foremost. Vaccination and economic recovery and
opening schools are critical for 2022, but the gains will
be short-lived if the Republicans retain the means to
restore minority rule next time they get power.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Like the Republicans under Trump, Democrats must also
be single-minded about getting as many qualified Federal
judges confirmed by the Senate while they can. Even
Trump-appointed judges mostly defended the Constitution
during the 2020 election aftermath, and Trump regrets
many of those appointments. Expect far worse next time
Republicans get control.

The imminent victory of the Taliban

 https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/17/politics/trump-biden-natsec-transition-fires/index.html

recalls lessons from Charlie Wilson's War -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Wilson%27s_War_(film)

In one scene he gives a succinct lesson in minority rule -
he found three single-issue constituencies (blacks, Jews,
and anti-communists), served them faithfully, and did as
he liked the rest of the time -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Wilson%27s_War_(film)

"Charlie Wilson is more interested in partying than
legislating, frequently throwing huge galas and staffing
his congressional office with young, attractive women. His
social life eventually brings about a federal investigation
into allegations of his cocaine use, conducted by federal
prosecutor Rudy Giuliani as part of a larger investigation
into congressional misconduct. The investigation results
in no charge against Wilson."

Sound familiar? Certainly a role model for new GOP
legislators who find interminable committee meetings
boring.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

We're still paying for Charlie Wilson's War. The curtain
is coming down at last with nothing to show for thousands
of man-years and billions of dollars of American effort.

Racism has been setting back poor and middle class white
people for two generations.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/13/opinion/race-economy-inequality-civil-rights.html

But RICH white people, the kind that donate to politicians,
are doing better than ever! So what's the problem?

Setting the masses against each other, instead of against
the ruling class, has been a pillar of minority rule
since 1619.

Violence is a pillar of minority rule.

Violence is the reward the masses get for preserving the
