Catholic Irish - different from the Protestant Scotch-Irish from the Borderlands - were the whisky-soaked papist bete noir of 1800. And later there were Germans and Italians and other non-Northern Europeans, who all took their turns as the punching bags for anti-immigrant sentiment, until they Americanized by taking up the same sentiment against later arrivals like Asians and Puerto Ricans.
