In hoc signo vinces!

Christianity's spiritual downfall coincided with its
rise to worldly greatness, when Constantine dreamed of
Christianity leading to military and political victory, and
so established the church for those ends. The church
reciprocated by interpreting scripture in ways useful to
the ruling political class, in the same way the Christian
Nationalists contort themselves to interpret Trump as some
sort of hero foretold in prophecy.

Like all prostitution, church and state demean themselves
in bed together.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/12/14/guns-christmas-thomas-massie-lauren-boebert/

Trump doesn't know or care about Christianity and probably
never even attended, much less taught, Sunday School.
But he cares about voters who will vote and donate on
faith, without question, without reference to facts.

A large segment of Americans is not particularly interested
in the future

There's reason to be concerned - there will be lots of
trouble in the future - just as there has been throughout
the past. Trump sets the example - why worry about
precedents set in the past or precedents set for the
future? Après moi, le déluge!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/25/fertility-rates-keep-falling-there-are-no-easy-solutions-fix-it/

Infants are born supposing everything is all about
themselves. Grandparenthood is the great revelation that
it's not all about us; we are each just links in the chain.
The main reason to have children is to have the chance to
have grandchildren.

But if you don't want grandchildren, or would not be good
at grandchildren, then don't have children. Increase
immigration instead, if you want to maintain your standard
of living.

Trump has forced us to re-evaluate Warren Harding who
clearly is not the worst president after all.

He initiated the first global disarmament treaty.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Naval_Treaty

He addressed the Tulsa riot.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2020/06/21/warren-harding-tulsa-race-massacre-trump/

He stunned the white supremacists in Birmingham - whose
spiritual heirs are still running the Trumpist Dixiecrat
party.

 https://getpocket.com/explore/item/this-presidential-speech-on-race-shocked-the-nation-in-1921

Forward looking and healing!

“Men who are really worthwhile are simpler than they
are appraised, and vastly greater than many partisans have
measured them.”

But if you prefer backward-looking partisan mediocrity,
you'll always have Trump! Uncontested worst president.

Silicon Valley is for followers. Ohio is for leaders.

That's what the billboard says on Capitol Expressway in
San Jose, near a homeless encampment. Some of the
homeless might find a lower cost of living in Ohio, but
worse weather.

It's propaganda from

 https://www.jobsohio.com/ohio-for-leaders/

It's hard to think of a single technology area in which
Ohio is a leader or attracts leaders. Or followers.
Ohio does offer low taxes, low real estate prices, and
an economy to match. Not to mention political leaders
like Jim Jordan -

 https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jul/27/jim-jordan-republican-capitol-attack-insurrection-house-select-committee

or the Cincinnati council -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/19/us/politics/cincinnati-city-council-bribes.html

California can match Jordan with Devin Nunes and Kevin
McCarthy, but they keep a safe distance from Silicon Valley
and new ideas except any dictated by Trump. For local
government, look up shrimpgate or shrimp boy.

Maybe Ohio can lure Elon Musk from Texas.

Here's what the Plain Dealer says -

Stolen election? It's not a statement of fact. It's a
statement of belief. After all, Trump always tells
the truth about what he feels and what he believes.
What else matters?

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/17/opinion/trump-voter-fraud-claims.html

The notion of an objective external reality is just a
myth created by science professors and Enlightenment
philosophers to mislead the masses. Stalin,
Hitler, Mao, Kim, Xi - they all saw right through it.

For a born-again Southerner, Trump is remarkably ignorant
about the reality of the Civil War - knowledgeable only
about the myth.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/09/10/robert-e-lee-statue-richmond-trump-history/

The South had no chance in a war of attrition because it
was an agrarian economy dependent on foreign trade, with a
static population, against a more populous industrializing
power that commanded the sea and the technology and had a
ready supply of immigrant cannon fodder. Foreign powers
who had already abolished slavery had little interest in
backing the losing side.

The only hope was to somehow quickly triumph in an invasion
of the North. Lee tried twice and failed both times.
Early successes led to over-optimism about the future -
a pattern repeated to the present day.

When push comes to shove - you find out what people
REALLY believe.

 https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-health-religion-coronavirus-pandemic-f42772097cf7557086f12b549e03b18a

Do you think the devil whispers in your ear telling
you to do evil things? Of course not - that's way
too inefficient. There are always a few people on
the fringes who actually want to do evil and violent
things because they are evil - but they need no help from
the devil. But there are far more people that would
do the same evil things if somebody told them they were
really righteous.

So instead the devil tells you to do virtuous things -
and helps you find them on social media - where they've
been conveniently listed for you by domestic and foreign
adversaries with interests in undermining reason and
stimulating hatred, unrest, or even violence - the devil's
work painted virtuous.

Of course, seducing an influential person this way is far
more efficient than seducing one more of the rank and file.
The biggest seduction line for people in power is you
have to do this one unpleasant thing in order to enable
all the virtuous things you want to do, because that's
how the world works. And that is indeed how the
devil does his work in the world.

There isn't one optimum population level. It depends on
the global standard of living that population aspires to.
Higher standard of resource consumption, lower sustainable
population.

 https://www.liberty-and-justice.net/

Birthrates decline and populations age wherever women
get the knowledge and means to control family size.
That's infuriated ambitious dictators for decades.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/06/07/please-hold-panic-about-world-population-decline-its-non-problem/

In America, GOP wants to make it as hard as possible
to control family size, and as hard as possible for
lower-income families to thrive economically. This
serves their ruling class donors well.

What is the oldest religion in the Bible?

It's quite plausible that the oldest story in the Bible is
the story of Job, which might have been an oral tradition
long before it was written down.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Job

It has no reference to any other specific religion but is
a reflection on what theologians call theodicy.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodicy

The oldest religion - yet always the most currently
relevant - is the religion of Job's friends, which they
try to impress upon Job in several sessions. It's a
simple belief system -

God is good. God loves good people and hates bad people.
God rewards good people and punishes and afflicts bad
people.

The part that has resonated with the rich and powerful
since before Job's time is the conclusion

If you are wealthy and powerful it is because you are good.
If you are poor and powerless and afflicted it is because
you are bad.

And even better

There's no point in the wealthy and powerful doing anything
for the poor and powerless and afflicted. Why go against
the judgment and will of God?

There's plenty of Hebrew and Christian scripture arguing
against their point of view -

Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell,
and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above
all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but,
except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

But that hasn't deterred the unrepentant rich and
powerful, in Job's time or ours. You can hear it every
day in Congress or any state legislature. The rich and
powerful deserve to have their taxes reduced, the poor
and powerless and afflicted deserve to have their social
safety nets removed.

Those politicians might pretend to be Christians or
Jews or atheists once a week, but Monday through Friday
they reveal themselves to be friends of Job's friends.

Pipe dreams of importing Silicon Valley!

Austin and Miami, in particular, have big dreams of taking
over from Silicon Valley -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/14/technology/san-francisco-covid-work-moving.html

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/15/opinion/tech-hope-america.html

Bloomberg thinks they have a chance if they just repeal
noncompete clauses -

 https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-12-30/how-texas-can-become-the-next-silicon-valley

They're completely delusional. Everybody who moves
to Texas or Florida has to deal with the effects of
reactionary Texas and Florida politicians who are dead
set against Silicon Valley without even knowing it.

Many years ago a technologist observed that in Silicon
Valley, people were loyal to a technology rather than
a company. Startups come and go; most go bankrupt, some
are bought out by a big company, some become big companies.
The founders vest in peace until they've gotten all their
stock and then leave for the next startup, unencumbered
by noncompete clauses.

Silicon Valley is the place to come help develop
revolutionary world-changing technology that, when it
works, turns big successful companies into obsolete
dinosaurs. So big successful companies are no
long as interested in dynamic world change as in static
defense against dynamic world change threatening their
business models. What's a welcoming environment
for obsolete dinosaurs?

How about a political environment based on minority rule to
PREVENT radical political or economic change that threatens
the ruling class?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

That sounds good! Especially coupled with low income
tax. So it's no surprise that large companies like HP
and Oracle want to relocate at least their headquarters
to Austin.

Oddly enough, though, those minority-rule states also tend
to correlate with low tolerance for diversity, unlike
California. So it's no surprise that HP and Oracle
have to leave the bulk of their engineering activity in
Silicon Valley where a diverse workforce is culturally
comfortable despite the cost of living. What pandemic?
What depression?

 https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/01/18/bay-area-home-prices-near-record-1-million-amid-covid-crisis/

Conservative old money doesn't like risky investments,
either. Business failure is often equated to moral
failure. But in Silicon Valley it's understood
that if you never fail it's because you never pushed the
envelope far enough to have a chance of world-changing
success. A startup failure can be a learning
experience for at least some of the people involved.
If an entrepreneur has a credible story of learning from
his failures, he might get another shot.

And the traffic is pretty bad in Miami and Austin, too.
And the weather. Some people don't mind that.
But transplanting an entire culture is a much bigger
project than repealing a couple of laws. #PS1technology

Will minority rule finally die of covid?

The virus led to lockdowns and then to zoom and then the
realization that many jobs can be performed remotely from
anywhere - at great savings to employers for expensive
commercial office space and for competitive salaries in
high-cost-of-living urban hubs.

the restless natives who resent change and higher taxes
and more expensive housing and less conservative politics.
