Tax breaks for billionaires are tax increases for you.

YOU pay for those tax breaks, one way or another.

The Republican solution for this? More tax breaks for
billionaires, of course!

There's a good reason to keep cutting the IRS enforcement
budget - IRS audits reduce the cash flow available for dark
money contributions to Republican campaign coffers.

 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/15/opinion/tax-evasion-irs.html

Taxes are for poor people, anyway. As the president so
well illustrates.

Paying taxes - that's for suckers!

Telling the truth - that's for suckers!

Trump's likely response - who leaked the truth?

 http://www.political-scrapbook.net/trump.html#insecurity

It's all of a piece with previous Trump financial
shenanigans uncovered by the NY Times -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/02/us/politics/donald-trump-wealth-fred-trump.html

that are being investigated by the New York attorney
general -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/new-york-ag-trump-organization-lawsuit/2020/08/24/882c03a8-e60e-11ea-bc79-834454439a44_story.html

Even Trump's family are victims -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/politics/donald-trump-father-will/

There's still time to impeach him! But no matter -
Trump's voters don't care. They'd do the same thing if
they could get away with it.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump--white-men-boat-parade/2020/09/27/dcd7bdd8-fe79-11ea-8d05-9beaaa91c71f_story.html

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/09/24/michigan-undecided-voters-democrats/

But what about Trump's major donors? Although many of
them have made similar tax moves, it's not public
knowledge. Will the adverse publicity associated
with Trump's taxes make him damaged goods from a major
donor viewpoint? If they are pretty sure he won't
be in office to reward their support, they'll find better
investments for their dark campaign cash. He might
not really be rich enough to make up the difference
himself.

The larger picture is that there are better ways to impose
taxes - keep it simple and harder to hide.

Who's going to pay for all the lost economic output of
the coronavirus?

 https://calmatters.org/california-divide/2020/08/coronavirus-economic-fallout-wealth-tax/

Even when they can't produce economic value due to the
virus, people still consume economic value just to stay
alive. That lost production will come out of somebody's
consumption sooner or later.

Maybe it's time for something simpler -

No deal this month!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/08/12/trump-coronavirus-relief-congress/

But Trump announced he'd pay for Social Security and
Medicare out of the general fund. By increasing
taxes on the rich? Good luck getting that past a
Republican Senate. That leaves... increasing taxes on
the non-rich.

Later he said he would pay for Social Security and Medicare

to agree to that, even though that would make it easier
to cut Social Security and Medicare later.

Cutting the IRS budget pays off!

Lots of Republican donors have more money to donate when
the IRS enforcement budget is cut! Though money
from major donors is more of an investment than a donation!
They expect return on investment at tax-bill-writing-time
and IRS-enforcement-budget-time. They prefer IRS
enforcement on things like earned income tax credit that
don't affect major donor/investors and can be accomplished
cheaply since EITC recipients can't afford fancy law firms.

Once more, with Feeling! - the truth about Trump and his
Republican enablers in the Senate!

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/23/opinion/sunday/coronavirus-economic-response.html

SAY one thing loudly to the voters, DO the opposite thing
quietly for the donors. That's how you get the money
to buy the ads to get the votes to sustain minority rule.
And a little discreet foreign support doesn't hurt, if
they conclude that your actions advance their strategic
objectives.

Trump's base thinks they are getting ripped off by the
other people, immigrants, the deep state, Democrats -
even though the truth is they are getting ripped off by the
Republicans who were telling them they were getting ripped
off by everybody else - and then accuse the Democrats of
promoting class warfare.

This paradox was the basis of minority rule by the
Dixiecrats in the South through the 1960's, and was then
adopted by the Republicans nationally as the Southern
Strategy which has been a pillar of their minority rule
ever since -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy.

If you've got enough money to repeat your message over
and over through every channel, enough voters will start
to believe it's true -

"It's us white men against all those people" -
not "us feudal lords against the poor."

This used to be a subliminal message, discreetly conveyed
to those who wanted to hear it. In the Trump era,
it's boldly broadcast to everybody. When it comes to
white supremacist rallies, Trump notices fine people on
both sides. He's never noticed any fine people at
Black Lives Matter rallies.

Trump administration's greatest hit #2!

Cut taxes on the rich! Trickle down economics is even
better than colloidal silver - it's colloidal gold!

So what if it's irrelevant to the virus or the recovery -
it's highly relevant to the important donors who will fund
the Republicans to victory in 2020!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-white-houses-coronavirus-cure-is-even-more-magical-than-we-could-have-imagined/2020/05/07/bde463f4-9097-11ea-a0bc-4e9ad4866d21_story.html

Tax reform could be a good thing at some point. Not if
the Republicans come up with it in secret dead-of-night
meetings again.

 http://www.one-flat-tax.net/

Now traditional Republicans are getting anxious about
deficits and debt. They should have remembered that
traditional concern when they were passing billionaire
tax relief in 2017.

Retirement MRD's - special rules for 2020

What do Minimum Required Distributions from IRA and 401K
retirement programs have to do with a virus? Not much, you
might think, but they get a big mention in the CARES Act.
That's because politicians of all stripes who just voted
for a $2 trillion bailout, need to have a bag of goodies
with something they can pull out for any audience during
their re-election campaign.

The part that's vaguely related to the virus is that
you can withdraw retirement funds early without paying
a penalty - but you still have to pay the regular tax on
ordinary income.

 https://www.fool.com/retirement/2020/04/09/4-ways-the-coronavirus-stimulus-bill-could-affect.aspx

It's usually not a good idea to withdraw your retirement
early, but if you have to, it won't hurt as much as usual.

The part that's harder to relate to the virus is that the
requirement that you take a minimum required distribution,
once you reach age 70 1/2, has been suspended for 2020.
If you don't need to take the MRD then you don't have to
take it and you don't have to pay a penalty. If you
don't need to take your RMD, then you must not be hurting
too badly from the virus. This provision is a goodie
in the bag for older better-off voters who don't need
any financial help, but do need a reason to return the
incumbent to office. It's nominally to avoid forcing
people to sell when the market is low, but it's more about
passing on a more generous estate to their heirs.

Most people who are hurting financially from the virus
don't know about RMD's and don't care. That's just the
way the politicians like it - putting in benefits for the
better off that are obscure enough that the majority of
voters won't get upset.

 https://itep.org/the-job-is-not-yet-done-itep-statement-on-the-2-trillion-relief-package/

It's exactly the way the 2017 tax cut was put together.

Never waste a pandemic -

Use the opportunity to reduce taxes on real estate
developers! For instance, what better time to allow them
to expense capital improvements in one year instead of
depreciating them over their lifetime?

It doesn't help residential homeowners, but major
Republican donors have a lot more wealth in commercial
real estate than in their personal residences.

 https://www.loopnet.com/learn/five-real-estate-takeaways-from-senate-approval-of-coronavirus-stimulus-/511170555/

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/03/31/trump-dc-hotel-sale/

Since these tax law changes have nothing whatever to do
with coronavirus, it's best to do them in secret late
at night. In public in the light of day, distract and
divert by talking about the $1200 that individual taxpayers
might get.

Switch to plan A!

 https://nypost.com/2020/03/03/trump-says-good-time-for-tax-cut-as-coronavirus-sinks-market/

Tax cuts for the rich always work - for the rich! As long
as they are advertised as for the middle class. Say one
thing in public, do the opposite in private - that's been
plan A for the Republicans for a century.

Plan B didn't work.

 https://nypost.com/2020/03/03/dow-falls-786-points-as-wall-street-shrugs-off-feds-surprise-rate-cut/

Although lowered interest rates are always good for real
estate speculators like Trump, the real purpose of leading
with plan B was to follow with plan A and make it seem
more necessary.

Neither lowered interest rates nor tax cuts will actually
do anything to ease global uncertainty about coronavirus
and its economic consequences, but why waste a good
crisis that's an opportunity for doing what you wanted to
do anyway?

 https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/8/31/20840700/indexing-capital-gains-to-inflation-example-donald-trump-twitter

Even if that weren't Trump's motivation, that will be the
motivation of the Republican bill writers in the Senate,
working in secret in the dead of night, and of the major
Republican donors that fund them.

Fill in the blanks!

When Congress passes a complicated tax law and can't agree
on the details, it often delegates the detailed regulations
to the IRS. This is a difficult process politically
and technically, particularly for an underfunded agency
