An aristocracy of wealth poses more harm and danger,
than benefit, to society.

-- Thomas Jefferson, 1821

There are those who believe that, if you will only
legislate to make the well-to-do prosperous, their
prosperity will leak through on those below. The
Democratic idea, however, has been that if you legislate
to make the masses prosperous, their prosperity will find
its way up through every class which rests upon them.

-- William Jennings Bryan, 1896

The wealthy establishment which the old Jefferson foresaw
and the young Bryan railed against doesn't take those ideas
lying down. They subscribe to social Darwinism and what
could be called Jobs-Friends-ism -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

And they have found ways to bypass income and estate taxes
to create a hereditary nobility just as Jefferson feared.

 https://www.propublica.org/article/the-great-inheritors-how-three-families-shielded-their-fortunes-from-taxes-for-generations

How can a tiny minority rewrite the tax code to their
benefit in a democracy? By making sure that huge
sums of money are required to run for political office,
especially for the U.S. Senate. And making sure that
unlimited dark money gets to candidates who will make sure
that unlimited dark tax avoidance and evasion techniques
remain available to their donors.

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-ubi.html

And once again the Senate has been the graveyard of tax
reform in BBB. GOP senators are almost all complicit,
and many Democrats as well, and not just the obvious
suspects Manchin and Sinema.

Voters keep voting for the same old senators who keep
voting for the same old tax anti-simplifications to benefit
the same old donors.

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

So how do billionaires keep avoiding taxes? Cheating is
important - so they're against funding IRS enforcement.
Secrecy is important - so they don't want anybody else
looking at their tax returns. Investing in senators
is important - so they're against any kind of campaign
finance reform.

And finally - disinformation is important, to get people
who would not be affected to fight for them for free.

How the tax code gets more complicated every time it
gets simplified.

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

Democratic legislators also feel the heat from major donors
who don't like to pay taxes.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/11/16/second-biggest-program-democrats-budget-gives-billions-rich/

You could make a logical argument for deducting all state
and local taxes, or for deducting none. But these odd
up-and-down SALT caps are pure political sausage making
in plain view. The first one was a GOP idea to punish
blue states as part of its 2017 billionaire tax relief.

But it's a concession to the very narrow margins for
passage of BBB in the House as well as the Senate.
Everybody's got their hands on the emergency stop cord
and it will be a miracle if nobody pulls on it long enough
for a bill to pass.

The real crisis facing America - savage unfair criticism
of the job-creating billionaire class!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/10/elon-musk-once-again-proves-need-billionaire-tax/

 https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-11-08/elon-musk-proves-why-a-billionaires-tax-is-needed

Polls show almost all voters favor increasing taxes on
the job-creating billionaire class! That would ruin
minority rule of a hereditary nobility!

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

So the only thing standing between America and ruin is
a few senators willing to accept unlimited dark campaign
money from the poor hard-working victims IN the billionaire
class!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/11/11/billionaire-tax-democrats-wyden/

As for the victims OF the billionaire class, they're mostly
lazy bums who should just work harder so they can join the
billionaire class. If they happen to win the lottery.
Then they'd want to preserve minority rule!

There's lots of ideas about how to increase tax fairness -

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-ubi.html

But they never get very far in the Senate.

Henry Olsen must be a traditional conservative ideologue.
He doesn't get that the modern Trumpist Dixiecrat GOP

You don't need progressive tax rates. A flat tax
uniformly applied would be far more progressive than
anything in our current system.

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

But the Dixiecrat GOP firmly believes taxes are for poor
people, to finance legislative benefits for major donors.

Who knew that South Dakota was in the same league as

 https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-business-religion-media-jordan-67b2674fc44fa543df49dfc8f52e29cd

Now we see why the GOP major donors, and their senators,
are so desperate to keep the IRS emasculated and focused
on EITC small potatoes.

Big shots don't like this kind of exposure. Putin
blamed Hillary Clinton for the Panama Papers, and that
led to his interference in the 2016 election and Trump's
election by 78,000 votes.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/08/28/putin-saw-the-panama-papers-as-a-personal-attack-and-may-have-wanted-revenge-russian-authors-say/

It also helped that Putin could see that Trump would be
a very useful idiot.

As for South Dakota - SOMEbody must be paying for Kristi
Noem's presidential ambitions!

Fact check - who pays for Biden spending plan?

McCarthy's comments require translation from GOP
public-speak-to-voters to private-speak-to-donors.

 https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-business-ap-fact-check-personal-taxes-congress-ae7ad0e5a1cb575b73933674b5ae74d9

When he says taxes on middle class will go up, he means
that GOP major corporate donors will attempt to offset tax
increases with lower wages or increase prices. That's why
we have minimum wages and allow foreign imports.

When he says IRS will invade your privacy, he means that
they will interfere with the tax evasion schemes of major
GOP donors. GOP prefers to limit IRS audits to EITC,
which only applies to poor people.

A flat tax on income (and wealth and estates) that replaces
all other income, sales, and payroll taxes, is the simplest
route to tax equity

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

especially combined with universal basic income that
replaces most other safety net and welfare expenditures

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-ubi.html

Biden has his eyes on the prize

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/23/us/politics/biden-wealthy-tax-rates.html

but even Democrats in Congress are reluctant to tackle
capital gains tax rates or stepped-up basis; instead they
want to restore full deductibility for state and local
taxes -

 https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/08/moderate-democrats-want-biden-spending-plan-to-eliminate-salt-cap.html

State and local taxes should either be fully deductible
or not at all; most of the benefit goes to the wealthy.

So Democratic donor investments in legislators are paying
off as well as Republican. Who wants to abolish
carried interest? Not many.

Why there won't be a bipartisan infrastructure bill - GOP
major donors are against increasing taxes or increasing
IRS funding to collect more taxes -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/07/07/irs-taxes-budget-conservatives/

so there won't be 10 GOP senate votes for infrastructure.

GOP candidates are allowed to TALK populist in public -
as Trump did campaigning in 2015 -

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

as long as they assure donors that they will VOTE to
preserve minority rule, as Trump did when he signed
billionaire tax relief in 2017.

Of course big companies pay taxes! It's just in
a different form from you. They pay their taxes
directly to legislative campaigns via PACs in the form of
dark money investment donations. If you did that in
a big way too, you too could avoid paying taxes.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/02/business/economy/zero-corporate-tax.html

It doesn't have to be that way! The tax code is so
complicated to make it easier for beneficiary legislators
to provide return on investment to their major donors.

It's not necessary to raise taxes - just raise the IRS
audit budget.

But no GOP major donor likes that idea, so no GOP senator
does either. Nothing will change as long as filibuster
is in force.

How minority rule works!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/03/19/we-need-rein-billionaires-start-with-south-dakota/

South Dakota's estate tax laws are top of mind for about 1%
of the 1%. But do they ever make a difference in whether
rich kids ever have to work for a living! With bad
effects all over the country and all over the world.

This is entirely within the power of the Federal government
to fix. But it is entirely within the power of the major
donors to all Republican senators and not a few Democrats
to make sure it never gets fixed. And we'll never
be sure who is pulling those levers because unlimited
dark campaign money is secret too, and they are equally
determined to keep it that way. And we'll never
do anything about unlimited dark campaign money either,
as long as filibuster is in place.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/democracy.html#corporate%20donations

Getting rid of filibuster and passing the voting
rights acts is key to making progress on just about all
progressive agenda items. Democrats must not lose this
chance. Otherwise minority rule forever.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Republicans will say they will undo everything Democrats
do next time they are in power, but that will not be as
easy as they hope since, once enacted, many Democratic
programs are so popular with Republican voters. And
Republicans are rightly scared that they can't retain
power if elections are fair.

Most Republican voters think they are voting against the 1%
elite even though that's exactly backwards. The 1% intend
to keep those voters misinformed and disinformed with
their multitude of distraction issues. Extreme wealth and
income inequality are properties of third world countries,
not advanced democracies. But those democracies have to
take active steps to control inequality.

Universal Basic Income and Flat Tax

UBI Highlights

A fixed flat-taxed monthly income for all American
voters A tax-free bracket for earned personal
service income Incentives for states to encourage
voting rather than suppression Elimination of most
means-testing benefit programs and their associated
       expensive bureaucracies

Flat Tax Highlights

A flat tax on all other income, divided between
Federal and state governments Elimination of
most other income, sales, payroll, and property
taxes Elimination of complex tax dodges and their
       associated expensive enablers

A vastly simplified flat tax offers many advantages
over the current labyrinthine structure. Above a certain
fixed amount that is not taxed, all income from whatever
source is taxed at the same rate. The ideal goal would
be a flat tax on discretionary income, but simplicity and
transparency are important aspects of tax policy, so the
zero-bracket amount is fixed.

Andrew Yang and others advocate a Universal Basic Income
for all Americans to address the worst economic uncertainty
and replace many unrelated ad-hoc means-tested assistance
programs, like the covid food line photo above. The
goal is to make sure that all Americans can afford
non-discretionary expenses of survival.

How can these ideas be combined?
