Centrist bias

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/22/opinion/warren-sanders-wealth-tax.html

It's true that revolutionary change does not come from
the center. It's also true that representative
democracy thrives on incremental change from the center
and that too much radical change too often leads toward
a government based on "permanent revolution" -
until the people finally say "enough". We are
not currently talking about medicare for all because
Eugene Debs or Norman Thomas won a socialist landslide,
but because bit by bit - Social Security - Medicare -
Medicaid - Obamacare - the realm of the possible was
expanded incrementally.

 https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/11/07/media-biased-against-elizabeth-warren-229907

The next revolutionary challenge doesn't have to do
directly with medical care, but with climate change
that at some point might very quickly become extreme and
irreversible, faster than incremental politics can handle.
The immediate existential threat of climate change is
how the peoples most affected take out their anger on the
peoples most responsible for it.

Congress can walk, chew gum, impeach, legislate, and spend
money, all at the same time!

Why not - there are 535 of them. And lobbyists are
really good at motivational speeches as the clock is
running down.

This is how sausage is made in a democracy.

Apprenticeships

Small steps that might actually be enacted by a divided
Congress and that might actually do some good.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/a-memo-to-2020-candidates-be-bold-think-small/2019/12/08/d80bb49a-1846-11ea-a659-7d69641c6ff7_story.html

A similar idea - ensure that community college vocational
training is available to anybody who wants it. There's
a vast upside for skills like automotive technology and
dental hygiene that don't require a four-year college
degree.

Ideology is the means by which the ruling classes get the
masses to act against their own self-interest.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/12/06/republicans-disdain-intellectualism-was-display-wednesdays-hearing/

Oddly enough, when it comes to their own surgery
or criminal defense or piloting an airliner, most
conservatives prefer candidates from the top of the class
of the best schools, in preference say to self-taught or
home-schooled or Trump U grads.

The Redemption movement continues to this day.

Not all Trumpists are Redemptionists, but all
Redemptionists are Trumpists. And Trump will never
renounce their support. It's one of the pillars
of the modern Republican Party since 1968, as well as
of Trumpism.

The best way to profit from the swamp is to run against it.

Nothing new here - politicians have been promising to
"clean up the mess in Washington" forever,
and for just as long, gleefully joining it as soon as
they arrive. If they actually cleaned up anything,
what platform would they run on next time? And how
would they get the money to run?

When national socialism comes to America, it will be
called Americanism!

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/02/opinion/national-conservatives-republicans-trump.html

The national socialists always carry an American flag.
And often a Confederate flag, and stranger banners.

Some are more subtle, at least in public.

Who was Theodore Roosevelt?

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/27/sunday-review/josh-hawley-roosevelt.html

A reformer, a nativist, an imperialist, a trustbuster,
a conservative and a progressive.

Why is he on Mt Rushmore?

According to

 https://www.nps.gov/moru/learn/historyculture/why-these-four-presidents.htm

because

He was instrumental in negotiating the construction of
the Panama Canal, linking the east and the west. He was
known as the "trust buster" for his work to end
large corporate monopolies and ensure the rights of the
common working man. Borglum chose Roosevelt to represent
the development of the United States.

The bad guys seem to do better. Even Roy Cohn died the
way he wanted, bankrupt and owing millions. Contemporaries
and historians weren't kind to Aaron Burr, but he had his
supporters and co-conspirators throughout his life.

Who's the socialist?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-is-the-true-socialist/2019/07/25/4f45410c-af1a-11e9-8e77-03b30bc29f64_story.html

There's a reason it was called the Nationalist Socialist
Worker's Party.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/26/opinion/nationalism-trump-conservative.html

Maybe someday Trump will publish a (ghost-written) book
My Struggle. Maybe he won't need a ghost writer if
he writes it in jail. If he falls from power, he will
not accept any responsibility, but blame it on the American
people who were not worthy of him.

Then as now, you could deduce what the left or right were
up to because they'd always accuse the other side of doing
what they were doing.

But it was socialism for the rich, free enterprise for
the poor. Like their ideological forebears, Republicans
have been seduced into Trumpists by a series of small
steps, one day at a time. They can't now say that
Trump has gone too far, without indicting themselves for
their silent complicity over the past two years.

Tucker Carlson and the rebirth of national socialism.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/07/22/what-comes-after-trump-may-be-even-worse/

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/26/opinion/nationalism-trump-conservative.html

There were other points of view -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/07/22/conservatives-are-still-grappling-with-trump-era-many-havent-yet-learned-their-lesson/

but it ooks like the national socialist plan is working -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/07/22/officer-suggests-ocasio-cortez-should-be-shot-after-he-read-fake-news-facebook/

They could even call it the National Socialist Donald
Adherents Party - N S D A P. It's certainly reactionary
but there's nothing conservative about it. And what,
exactly, has Trump done to improve the lot of his base, as
opposed to the lot of his billionaire donors - not much -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/23/us/politics/trump-working-class.html

Those that can't get with the program will have to find
their own way.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/07/22/geraldo-rivera-comes-his-senses-trump/

And now it's clear why Trumpist evangelicals are so keen
on Netanyahu and Israel. When they go down the removal
list and get to the "cosmopolitan elitists"
they'll need a place to tell them to go home to or else,
even if their ancestors left 2000 years ago.

According to Reagan -

"The most terrifying words in the English language
are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

 https://www.reagan.com/blog/105/ronald-reagan-on-big-government-most-terrifying-words

It's always good for applause from Republican farmers and
billionaire campaign donors, who however have very definite
expectations of help from the Federal government.

But for everybody else, really, how does that differ from

"I'm from Wall Street and I'm here to help."

"I'm from Silicon Valley and I'm here to help."

"I'm from the church and I'm here to help."

"I'm from the Kremlin and I'm here to help."

Here to help yourselves... to WHAT?

It's hard to accomplish anything significant without help.
It can be just as hard to determine the real agenda of
organizations offering help.

Reactionary theorists have lost their way.

They're sure there's a majority out there somewhere that's
in favor of their ideas, and their only problem is defining
the correct coalition.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/04/opinion/conservatives-david-french-trump.html

 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/31/opinion/sohrab-ahmari-conservative.html

Practical reactionaries like Mitch McConnell aren't fooled.
They know the Trumpists are a minority party and they
have to use every constitutional hook, propaganda trick,
and billionaire donation to retain power.

What's the difference between conservatism, Republicanism,
and Trumpism?

Most Trumpists identify themselves as conservatives.
Do most conservatives identify themselves as Trumpists?

 http://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#conservative

Third-party and independent candidates would be more viable
if ranked-choice voting were the norm -

 https://www.fairvote.org/

Right now it's pretty hard to find any difference between
"Republican" and "Trumpist."

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/04/22/no-bottom-republicans-show-theyll-defend-just-about-everything-trump-does/

But there are a few

Nixon's support seemed to disappear overnight - but that
was a culmination of a year of erosion. Who can say
for sure whether the current trickle will become a torrent
some night?
