The division in the country is no longer between the
traditional conservative Republican and liberal Democratic
parties, but between the Trumpist Dixiecrat cult of
personality party and the anti-Trumpist rule of law party.

Traditional conservatives who still think of themselves
as Republicans should avoid making the Franz von Papen
mistake.

Democrats' secret weapon!

Trump spends his time fighting Republicans rather
than Democrats and plotting his revenge against the
10 Republican House members who voted for his second
impeachment, the seven Republican senators who voted to
convict him and the 13 House Republicans who voted for
the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

McConnell won’t release an agenda before the
midterms. He’s worried that specific proposals are
nothing but fodder for Democratic attacks.       That's
right!    Keeping the REAL agenda secret is essential to
minority rule.

But who need an agenda, real or imaginary?  Republican
candidates allow their Democratic opponents to define them
negatively — and then, take office in January 2023 with
no idea what to do.    They assume they will win next year
without doing anything of significance.          They know
exactly what to do - get on Fox as often as possible to
praise Trump!     Was there anything else?

Traditional conservatives still cling - like a drowning
man to wreckage - to their fantasy that the GOP is a
traditional conservative party instead of a Trumpist
Dixiecrat personality cult.

racism is not merely the product of individual bias or
prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems
and policies

1619 was indeed the founding date of Southern feudal
hereditary aristocracy based on slavery, then segregation,
and now suppression.   Read about the compromises of
1820 and 1850, the KKK and Plessy v Ferguson, Woodrow
Wilson segregating Civil Service.      It wasn't just a
few bad people, it was foundational for a whole society.
Abernathy recognizes this.

mean he is one.       He's a personality cult, which
works the same way from the far right to the far left.
And he's a personality cult in service, probably unaware,
of that same Southern feudal hereditary aristocracy,
now spread throughout rural America.

his would-be successors, who have to pretend to love him,
and the even greater chagrin of traditional conservatives,
who now have no home until they recognize that the choice
in 2022 and 2024 is pro-Trump or anti-Trump.

willing to abandon Trump on Jan 7, but they must have have
gotten different marching orders from their donors, some of
whom also seemed to back off from Trump, but most of whom
apparently reconsidered quickly.     Perhaps they decided
that Trump would help elect a minority-rule-defending
Congress in 2022 but would be incompetent again in 2024
and wouldn't get in their way - electing Trump would block
somebody more dangerous for four more years.

But his incompetence and malice toward those he considers
disloyal might jeopardize the GOP majority in 2022 or
pack it with idiots bad enough to get Democrats back
in 2024.   Subordinating his own personal desires to the
best interests of a team is not in his DNA.

So as insurance, major donors seem to have gotten fully
onboard rigging future elections by gerrymandering, voter
suppression, and enabling state legislatures to overturn
elections wherever they can.       That way GOP can still
win even if Trump gets in the way.

and convicted for the high crime of opposing Trump?

And poor Kevin would have debased himself for nothing.
But Trump enjoys watching people debase themselves for
nothing, in the hope - often in vain - of some fleeting
favor.  Just ask Mitt Romney!  Maybe Trump would let Kevin
be majority leader.

But even better - Trump could be elected Speaker without
ever running for the House!  The Constitution only says
that The House of Representatives shall choose their
Speaker and does NOT say that the Speaker must be a
Representative.  The President of the Senate is not a
Senator, after all.

Hawley as a progressive, somewhat in the mold of Theodore
Roosevelt.

would definitely find a place in National Socialism, but

Trump will run again - he wants to, and his sycophants
know that and will tell him what he wants to hear, that
he'll win.

Apparently the major GOP donors are OK with that - hence
McConnell's change of tune since Jan 7.     From their
point of view, an incompetent and likely senescent Trump
is preferable to his abler and bolder would-be successors,
who might actually attempt revolutionary changes.

The times to draw the line were in 2015 and 2019.  Instead,
GOP leaders just got in line.

Any independent commission empowered to examine under oath,
subject to penalties for perjury, Trump, Pence, and their

congressional delegation and quite a few state officials,
and perhaps would take down the passive as well as the
active enablers in swing districts.     So it won't happen
on a bipartisan vote, and now we know that filibuster

What's in it for me?

GOP leaders are trying in vain to get Trump to focus on
the GOP instead of himself.     They are unclear on the
concept - Trump is GOP is Trump.   L'état, c'est moi!

He doesn't care if the Republicans control Congress if
he's not president.       It's more important to him to
exact revenge on everybody who has failed him, lining up
pure Trumpists to primary the traitors.    Get them out
of Congress and out of his party.    Then he'll be ready
to run for president in 2024.

Why Mitch won't put up with Trump any more, though he's
not quite ready to say it in public.

McConnell has devoted his career to maintaining minority
rule - and insuring his re-election - through thick and
thin by keeping his fractious caucus together no matter
what - preventing votes from coming to the floor that would
be divisive.      His reward is that he's mostly gotten his
way on anything coming through the Senate.     This means
that he has probably subordinated his personal preferences
at times for the good of maintaining his caucus.

Trump, in contrast, never subordinates himself to anything
or anyone.     He is excited about the prospect of spending
the next four years persecuting the RINOs who were not
fully loyal to him.

Of course, the Trumpists are the true Republicans in
Name Only - with no traditional Republican ideology, they
happened to land in the Republican Party only because it
had to accept them to bolster its minority-rule coalition.

of McConnell's caucus.       The only clear path forward
for either half of the Republican Party is to foment a
corresponding split in the Democratic caucus - and they
do have ideological Democrats sympathetic to that cause.
