Romney is still a traditional conservative interested in
defending minority rule makers from all those Democratic
takers.

 https://www.mediamatters.org/lou-dobbs/makers-vs-takers-romneys-47-percent-rhetoric-echoes-fox-news

But what's Karl Smith been smoking?

 https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-12-28/biden-agenda-in-2022-could-depend-more-on-romney-than-on-manchin

Bipartisan support for anything? Trump put an end to
that after the physical infrastructure bill passed with
GOP support.

Romney is about as popular with Trumpists as Biden,
Clinton, or Obama. They will vote down anything he
proposes, especially if Biden supports it. To pass
under reconciliation, the Democrats could only lose one
vote if they got Romney's. Manchin and Sinema MIGHT
go along - though they've fooled everybody before - but
to expect the other 48 Democrats in the Senate to give up
on the rest of BBB is unrealistic.

Is there ANY version of BBB that can pass the Senate AND
the House? Not today.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/12/23/biden-manchin-child-tax-credit/

But ALL the Democrats know that failure to deliver on ANY
of their promises is bad for ALL of them. GOP has
two playbooks ready to roll in 2022 - either blame
Democrats for doing nothing or blame Democrats for doing
something. So they might as well do something promptly.
Then promptly move on to voting rights.

It might have been a mistake to split the physical
infrastructure and BBB bills. If Manchin were going to
kill them anyway, better get it over sooner, and promptly
move on to a plan B, than waste months of Senate time,
a surprisingly scarce commodity.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/12/19/manchin-build-back-better-oppose-democrats-playing-soft/

It's evident that there will be no bipartisanship
between Trumpists and anti-Trumpists. The physical
infrastructure bill passed because of bipartisanship
between anti-Trumpist Democrats and anti-Trumpist
traditional conservative Republicans. The latter
might have been more reasonable about BBB and voting
rights if their physical infrastructure goodies were in
greater jeopardy.

Or maybe nothing would have ever been passed. Trumpists
were hoping for that. But both Biden and the senators
who voted for physical infrastructure were desperate to
get something they could show voters.

If Manchin won't vote for BBB in any form and won't say
what he will vote for, can he still be useful to America?

It's hard to say what he might do since he listed covid
as a reason to vote against BBB. That is the sort of
irrelevant excuse that a Trumpist would offer, and if he
meant that, he might as well accept McConnell's invitation
to join the Trumpist Dixiecrat GOP.

I very much appreciate Manchin’s opposition - Lindsey
Graham.

 https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-business-joe-manchin-congress-937bac56b09dfda5be2ed70748b5cd01

Without warning, Manchin announced his decision on BBB on
Fox, which is also a very Trumpist thing to do.

However, if Manchin is not a 100%-on-board Trumpist then he
is by definition an anti-Trumpist, and he will not really
be welcome for long in the GOP, But he could announce
that he is going to remain in the Democratic caucus as an
independent traditional conservative, voting with other
traditional conservatives on the traditional conservative
issues - which includes supporting voting rights and the
rule of law - which are Democratic issues now, since the
GOP has abandoned them.

Maybe Manchin could get one or two GOP senators to join
his little caucus. They'd vote with the GOP on most
things, but with the Democrats on fundamental issues of
voting rights and the rule of law, rule of the people,
by the people, for the people. Manchin's persuasive
powers are slight, though; he tried to find 10 GOP votes
for his watered-down bipartisan version of voting rights,
but could only find one.

 https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/579673-manchin-murkowski-back-revised-john-lewis-voting-rights-bill

It's doubtful that Manchin will touch filibuster, even to
pass his watered-down voting rights bill.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/12/19/manchin-opposes-build-back-better-biden-agenda/

If the GOP ever abandons Trumpist cult of personality
and returns to traditional conservative principles, those
anti-Trump senators would return to the GOP fold.

Unless Manchin's willing to drink all the Trumpist koolaid,
he's going to lose some major donors and be opposed in
the primary and general elections by certified Trumpists.

There will never be bipartisanship between Trumpists and
anti-Trumpists but there's at least a chance between GOP
anti-Trumpists and Democratic anti-Trumpists. If Manchin
is willing to work on it.

Facts have nothing to do with it! GOP will say anything
whether true or not.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/19/build-back-better-passes-dumb-gop-attack/

Having a SALT tax cap was a bad idea. Raising it was a
bad idea. But for GOP to claim to be for middle-income
taxpayers is a very bad joke. Read all about the 2017
billionaire tax relief to see what GOP really supports -

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

The Democrats could remove the SALT tax cap raise and GOP
would still vote against BBB, because they vote against
everything from Biden now - especially anything raising
taxes on their donors - hoping that a wrecked economy will
lead to GOP control of Congress in 2022. They don't
even support their own bipartisan infrastructure bill
any more.

It was a straight party line vote, except for Democrat
Jared Golden of Maine, who didn't like raising the SALT
cap. Biden didn't like it either, but that's how the
sausage gets made - it's called compromise.

McCarthy's 8 hour rant might have fortified some wobbly
Democrats to vote for the bill.

Republicans said the latest legislation would give tax
breaks to some wealthy taxpayers

 https://apnews.com/article/climate-immigration-joe-biden-health-lifestyle-bff841da156cb12cd47a564f9e0267eb

Oh the horror! We all thought GOP loved tax breaks to
wealthy taxpayers! But perhaps translation is required
here - some wealthy taxpayers means major Democratic
donors.

McCarthy proved his leadership mettle by ranting aimlessly
for 8 hours to beat Pelosi's record. He's trying so
hard to prove he'll be a FIGHTER for Trump if he becomes
speaker! Strom Thurmond, the founder of the modern
Dixiecrat GOP, would be so proud.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/house-mccarthy-reconciliation/2021/11/19/3a07263c-48e9-11ec-b05d-3cb9d96eb495_story.html

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/19/us/politics/kevin-mccarthy-speech.html

 https://apnews.com/article/immigration-donald-trump-joe-biden-kevin-mccarthy-congress-4e62762dee96af071d139ac9d4624b01

But what if Trump ran for Congress in 2022 in some safe
district and demanded to be elected Speaker, so he could
succeed Biden and Harris after they were impeached and
convicted for the high crime of opposing Trump? Then poor
Kevin would have debased himself for nothing. But Trump
enjoys watching people debase themselves in the hope -
often in vain - of some fleeting favor. Just ask Mitt
Romney! Maybe Trump would let Kevin be majority leader.

Where does the Constitution say that the Speaker can't be
the same person as the President? Or that President
Trump couldn't nominate himself to serve on the Supreme
Court as well? That would show Putin and Xi who
the REAL strong leader is! And then the constitutional
amendment making him President for Life, and to top off his
imperial presidency, declare that he is in fact immortal
and the Second Coming of God as prophesied in a tweet -

 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-tweets-quote-calling-him-the-second-coming-of-god-to-jews-in-israel/

Even if some of these dreams never come to pass, the
effort would serve to illuminate who in the GOP is REALLY
loyal to the Trump personality cult and eliminate those
merely going through the motions out of self-serving
opportunism. Of course, a self-serving opportunist
at the top is going to attract self-serving opportunists
all the way down, so the purge might be extensive.

But the only way to become immortal is to die, and GOP
has plenty of would-be successors to Trumpism, even worse
than Trump because abler and bolder, that would secretly
hope and pray for his early immortality. Just as in
ancient imperial Rome!

The House Democrats finally accomplished something.
They passed an infrastructure bill that had already passed
the Senate months ago.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/11/05/house-infrastructure-reconciliation-vote/

Since the outcome of BBB is still in doubt - it may be
weeks before the CBO weighs in -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/05/upshot/biden-budget-scorekeepers-cbo.html

they all recognized that they had better do SOMEthing while
they still could. GOP proved the couldn't even draft,
much less pass, an infrastructure bill in four years,
just as they could never quite remember how to write
their Obamacare replacement that would provide better
coverage at lower cost to more Americans. When it comes to
legislation, GOP is better at blocking and tackling than
passing - or even drafting. Their internal divisions
make the Democrats look sensible, but that doesn't show
as long as they don't try to pass anything. Being GOP,
they don't need to pass anything to please their donors.

Thus, although the Senate bill passed on a bipartisan
basis, in the House, Republicans voted 200-13 against it.

Persuadable swing voters mostly don't follow politics or
economics closely. They couldn't tell you what BBB
contained even if it weren't constantly shifting. They
mostly got the price tag - trillions of dollars! without
comparison to e.g. the 2017 GOP billionaire tax relief.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/05/virginia-results-build-back-better/

Some were motivated by culture wars, but most persuadables
vote their pocketbooks, and, not following politics or
economics closely, blamed Biden for supply chain issues,
labor shortages, and inflation. That negative outlook
might have increased the appeal of culture wars.

The way to get the persuadables next time is to pass BBB
and change their lives for the better.

The Democratic majority in 2023 is in great peril.
Democrats must show SOME accomplishments that seem tangible
to persuadable voters, most of whom vote their pocketbooks
because they don't follow politics.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/24/opinion/biden-voting-filibuster.html

To have even a chance of keeping control and preventing
GOP from undoing everything he's done, Biden must pass
some version of BBB before he can tackle voting rights
and filibuster. AND he must somehow keep the GOP
from forcing a default on debt or from shutting down the
government, which they'd love to do to make Biden look bad
to the persuadables. It's a complicated obstacle course
with many paths to failure.

Is Biden competent?

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/14/opinion/joe-biden-democratic-party.html

It's hard to say - he started out well, but Afghanistan
looked bad because it was - but it's hard to believe
that defeat was going to look much different no matter
who pulled the plug. Manchin and Sinema can block all
of Biden's initiatives but haven't said what they would
support. McConnell has gotten over bipartisanship and
promised to block everything Democratic, looking forward
to wrecking the economy and blaming Biden.

Inflation and price increases was a surprise dividend of
the Trump and Biden covid relief, but would have been a
problem anyway because of supply shortages due to covid
in foreign manufacturing countries, interacting with the
overlooked weaknesses of just-in-time logistics.

There is massive unemployment and massive help-wanted
due to covid fears, aided and abetted by GOP governors
and legislators, and due to lack of child care, and due
to massive rethinking of the meaning of life and work,
also thanks to covid. That means wages are rising,
to the dismay of GOP donors.

GOP will blame Biden for all that, and Democrats won't.
Persuadable voters in swing states will vote their
pocketbooks, which is why the GOP is keen to prevent
further economic recovery.

A revolutionary disguised as a evolutionary!

"hard-working, decent American people who are really
having it stuck to them"

Sounds like something Trump would say, but Biden said it.
The difference is Biden means it.

He's redefining bipartisanship - "getting support from
rank-and-file Republican voters, even if GOP politicians
in Washington follow their long-standing habits of
obstruction".

Most ordinary GOP voters support the social safety net, and
infrastructure work, and paying for it by taxing the rich.
Major GOP donors are opposed to all that so GOP senators
are as well, though they pretend otherwise in public.
This "SAY one thing and DO the opposite"

is a pillar of minority rule, which is why Biden is
bypassing them and appealing directly to voters.
