There's a reason America's founders put the Establishment
clause at the beginning of the bill of rights. They
knew all about churches established for political ends.

 https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/26/opinions/ten-commandments-school-prayer-texas-hemmer/index.html

But the reactionary forces opposed to the Enlightenment
never gave up, and the Trumpist Dixiecrat GOP intends to
finish the job this time, and thereby secure minority rule.

Rewriting history - a major industry in the Old South,
in the Soviet Union, and in the New South.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/1619/virginia.html

Who needs liberating education when you can impose forced
indoctrination?

 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/20/opinion/desantis-history-education.html

==

Oddly enough, Phi Beta Kappa - Love of learning is the
guide of life - was founded in Virginia - probably by sons
of slaveholders -

 https://uh.edu/honors/students/current-students/societies/phi-beta-kappa/

though its members were probably familiar with the
Enlightenment ideals of freemasonry.

 http://www.tnlor.org/?p=24&print=pdf

What would those founders think of DeSantis?

What we really love are money and power, period. On
some level we think having them is an indication that
you deserve them. This is another core belief that
“Succession” deftly skewers: the idea that the rich
are somehow better, more intelligent, more competent.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/20/opinion/succession-wealth-striving.html

Nothing new here - it's just the theology of Job's friends,
beloved by the rich and powerful of all times and places.

 https://www.facebook.com/politicalscrapbooknet/posts/1792247641119747

And not far from the Divine Right of Kings -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_right_of_kings

incidental damage from the establishment of state
religions.

You don't have to look far to find the scorn of the born
rich for the strivers - whether in Trump's New York or
Tennessee Williams' South.

The fundamental dilemma of minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

how to keep the single-issue voters voting for you without
alienating every other persuadable voter.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/07/opinion/abortion-rights-wisconsin-elections-republicans.html

By giving them some of what they want, the GOP didn't
satisfy the right-to-lifers, they encouraged them to
demand more. Kind of like dealing with Putin -
compromise is interpreted as weakness.

The right-to-lifers are not going to vote Democratic
for spite. But if they don't get their way, they
might stay home, or vote for really fringey primary or
third-party candidates with no chance in the general
election, handing swing districts to Democrats.

And like the psychopath fanatics they're becoming,
instead of changing course, GOP has doubled down on its
losing strategy.

Abolish the existing Federal government and replace it with
political appointees who promise to protect minority rule!
To heck with Constitution, Congress, laws, and norms!
The president makes the decisions. Just like DeSantis in
Florida, Huey Long in Louisiana, and other examples abroad.

Trump hates to be bothered by the petty details of
governing and negotiating with Congress, so he'll be glad
to delegate all that to his Heritage henchmen.

Are you confused about the cause of the Civil War?
Alexander Stephens wasn't -

its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro
is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination
to the superior race is his natural and normal condition

 https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/cornerstone-speech

The interesting question of that day - echoed since time
immemorial right down to today - is how did the ruling
class get the masses to fight on behalf of the ruling
class, against the masses' own interests?

A rich man's war, a poor man's fight

By dividing the masses and pitting them against each other
- as reflected in our own culture wars.

Why can't we just agree on taking care of children and
families?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/16/political-polarization-solution-ej-dionne

It's easy - as long as no money is involved. The
hard-working overtaxed job-creator megadonors - who pay
for GOP politics and a lot of Democratic politics - are
firmly opposed to any plan to tax them to support shiftless
irresponsible lazy poor people. After all, the
megadonors' children are well cared for. So hard-bargained
bipartisan proposals end up going nowhere.

Of course they usually don't SAY this, at least not
in public. Tough love sounds bad - a lot like stinginess.

this poor widow has put in more than all Nothing has
changed in 2000 years.

And nothing much WILL change as long as politics runs
on unlimited dark money - masquerading as free speech,
thanks to a judiciary groomed to be compliant.

Who needs the Hatch Act?

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatch_Act

Independent civil service? Selfless public servants at
the top attract selfless public servants all the way down.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendleton_Civil_Service_Reform_Act

You can't count on them to defend minority rule!
But Trump's backers have a plan -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/19/trump-plan-federal-takeover/

A self-serving opportunist at the top attracts self-serving
opportunists all the way down. Back to the spoils
system! Look how well it works for Putin!

There's a long history of anti-Catholicism in America -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Catholicism_in_the_United_States

ESPECIALLY among just the kind of people that make up major
elements of the Trump base that all GOP candidates have
to court to a sufficient degree - close enough to protect
them from being primaried, far enough to keep them from
losing the general..

 https://apnews.com/article/governor-ron-desantis-catholic-republican-religious-voters-766131e0c743f4bf854bc47c89720522

So DeSantis keeps quiet about Catholicism. That
works because the reactionary wings of Catholicism and
evangelical Protestantism have coalesced politically if
not theologically to support minority rule - showing once
again how theology conforms to politics, not vice versa.
No man can server two masters!

A joke from 1960 - I wouldn't want an American pope.
He'd have to take orders from the president.
