Trump thinks the more minor GOP candidates the better -
auditioning to be his VP, perhaps.

 https://apnews.com/article/republican-primary-trump-desantis-pence-christie-b0a18225ec5f9d0f53aa0f08b292a2f3

But Trump's ace in the hole is to threaten to run as a
third party if he's not nominated. Just the implicit
threat, perhaps relayed by third parties to the megadonors,
should be enough.

He's never promised he wouldn't run, and never promised he
would support a GOP nominee that wasn't Trump. Not that
a Trump promise means much.

Trump’s 2016 victory reinforced the idea that
‘electability’ is a ploy used by the media and squishy
Republicans to discredit candidates who are willing to
fight for them

 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/24/opinion/ron-desantis-republican-primary.html

The Trump base will vote for him no matter what, because
they believe - against all objective evidence - that he
identifies with them and voices their values and concerns.
All GOP candidates depend on megadonor investors, but Trump
has the unusual advantage of also getting huge amounts of
small donations - from voters who expect nothing in return
except that Trump remain himself, giving them permission
they've always wanted to be their own worst selves.

The Trump base alone is not big enough to win, but it is
big enough to doom any other GOP nominee.

Yet another reason Trump won't go down without a fight - he
thinks getting re-elected is his get-out-of-jail-free card.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/24/opinion/desantis-republicans.html

And Trump's other big motivator is revenge - especially on
allies and subordinates that betray him - as they almost
all do eventually - that's the kind of subordinates that
guys like Trump attract.

And Trump has never said that he would never run as a
third party, nor that he would always support the GOP
nominee whoever it was.

A good way to get out of testifying at a trial.

 https://apnews.com/article/trump-election-investigation-carroll-manhattan-trial-willis-dbade1b2e2e4a39234b2e539abf43b71

That's why his base loves him - he models perfect behavior
for them, saying whatever, whenever, wherever he wants.
Trump would rather testify on Truth Social anyway.

Why are we stuck with Trump?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/03/26/why-republican-politicians-do-not-criticize-trump/

Because he does what the megadonors want without being
told - and he does what Putin wants without being told -
and he's willing to destroy the Republican Party to save
it - for himself. Even DeSantis can't connect as well
with all the lunatic fringe voters.

Some megadonors started to have cold feet after Jan 6,
but soon they realized that mindless rampaging Dixiecrat
rioters were much less of a threat to minority rule than
mindful rampaging social justice Democrat legislators.

While Trump makes lot of noise, McConnell and McCarthy can
quietly enact and protect the real minority rule agenda
in the background - lower taxes for megadonors, lower
benefits for everybody else, deregulation for megadonors,
union busting for megadonors, porous immigration laws for
megadonors, suppression of undesirable voters. DeSantis
would be happy to do all that too, but he can't pry a
winning majority of the lunatic fringe away from Trump.
And maybe no other Republican can either, and there's no
GOP victory nationally or in swing states without keeping
all the lunatic fringe on board, who vote according to
the noise and not according to the background action.

he has not learned his lesson

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/24/trump-hush-money-death-destruction/

Wrong! Trump clearly HAS internalized his lesson -
that there is no position too degrading for GOP leaders to
assume in his defense - not because they care about Trump -
most would prefer that he'd just disappear into Siberia.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/03/24/trump-indictment-truth-social-post-gop-reaction/

But GOP leaders don't want to alienate the Trump base
and provoke a third-party candidacy that would guarantee
Biden's re-election - and perhaps a blue wave that would
decimate hopes for GOP control of Congress, and might turn
more purple state legislatures blue.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/03/23/indictment-would-help-both-trump-democrats/

So they try to change the subject to avoid the issue.

Trump is finding the whole affair a useful exercise to weed
out any half-hearted GOP supporters, even if the New York
indictment didn't land last Tueday or indeed never lands.
He's made $1.5 million off it so far.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/03/24/trump-indictment-waiting-manhattan-da/

Of course there's still Georgia, and the Federal special
prosecutor for Mar-a-Lago.

Trump found something to praise in the Chinese Communist
Party -

Trump never met a dictator he didn't like, as long as they
flattered him, by suggesting he was their peer in strength
of suppression of opposition.

The only good news about Trump is that his attention span
is too short to accomplish much directly. The damage
will be done by his administration, advisers, and allies.
What they say and write should be taken literally and
seriously. As long as Trump is treated like an
emperor, he'll just talk dirty and leave the dirty work
to others.

Trump's brown shirts are planning America's transition to
fascism. Reduce federal government? Not on Trump's
watch - it's going to be everywhere! Regulating everybody
- except Trump megadonors, of course.

Of course, he has no idea how to do any of this, and no
patience to learn. His handlers feed him lines that get
good response at his rallies.

But then where will he get his brown shirts?

Nobody else seems to be able to attract the Trump base,
so it's going to be Trump vs Biden. Anybody who votes
for somebody else might as well vote for Trump, since
other candidates will only attract a few Biden voters.
But it only takes a few votes in the swing states.

The core Trump base will never abandon Trump because he,
leading by example, gives them permission to ignore facts,
logic, consistency, politeness - and just act out their
emotions.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/17/donald-trump-gop-voters-2024-race/

The larger Trump base might eventually figure out that he
only TALKS to them to tell them what they want to hear
- and he ACTS on behalf of the ruling class, letting
McConnell do what they want, just like most politicians.
If Trump had been as rich as he claimed, he could have
run his campaign without asking for other people's money,
but spending his own money was never his plan - just like
most politicians and salesmen.

A three-way race!

 https://apnews.com/article/trump-election-2024-republicans-primary-32fee08d67db8b8dc9c8ca2e003db43d

There are three main groups of voters - those who will
vote for Trump and Trumpists no matter what, those who
will vote Democratic no matter what, and everybody else.
None command a majority.

Getting re-elected is Trump's get-out-of-jail-free
card. His strategy, if he has one, has to be to run a
three-way race that ends in the House of Representatives,
where a corrupt bargain can be struck, as in 1877.
