Is Prigozhin setting up to avoid taking the blame if
Ukraine retakes Bakhmut?

 https://nytimes.com/2023/05/25/world/europe/ukraine-war-wagner-russia.html

Putin seems to have no problem with his public comments.

Stepping up to the brink and over the edge.

 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2023/02/24/russia-ukraine-war-oral-history-00083757

And our intelligence services saw it all coming, but
nobody wanted to believe the evidence. One of the
fundamental changes Putin wrought is American downgrading
- declassification - of intelligence for strategic
positioning.

In a cult of personality, there is no career benefit to
being the first to bring bad news. Putin purged his own
intelligence services for reporting only good news -

 https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/putin-purges-150-intelligence-agents-for-ukraine-failures-report/ar-AAW7rvv

But that won't solve the fundamental problem.

To become immortal as a great czar, Putin destroyed the
credibility of the Russian army, united Europe like never
before, drove Sweden and Finland into NATO, and killed
tens of thousands of people - for nothing. But A Life
for the Czar is very traditional Russian -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Life_for_the_Tsar

and a million lives for the Czar are a million times
better. As Stalin certainly thought, and might have said -
one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.

 https://quoteinvestigator.com/2010/05/21/death-statistic/

Like Hitler after Sudetenland, Putin after Crimea thought
Ukraine was his for the taking. But maybe he shares
credit , along with Zelenskyy, for discouraging Xi from
invading Taiwan.
